How old does a student need to be to start violin lessons?

The Mannington Music School usually starts students in private lessons at 8 years old, around 2nd or 3rd grade.

However, for students ages 4 to 7 who are currently enrolled in our Musical Explorer program, we offer special pricing on Suzuki violin lessons. The student must remain enrolled in the Musical Explorer program to be eligible for private violin lessons.

I am a "mature" student. Is it too late for me to start piano lessons?

It’s never too late to enjoy music. It’s really not about how old you are, it’s about your level of commitment. The progress that you make is directly related to the amount of effort you put in.

I don't own a violin. Do you rent violins?

The Mannington Music School provides violins to our Kindermusik students taking the violin add-on. We do not have rental instruments for students in private study. We recommend Coles Music Service in Sewell, NJ for long-term rentals.

What are the benefits of renting vs. buying?

Unlike many instruments, violins come in many sizes. It is important to get the correct size violin for the player. If a student is young and growing rapidly, it will be more economical to rent a violin. Usually rental companies allow you to “size up” as the child grows.

I'm ready to buy an instrument. Where do you recommend?

We highly recommend Shar Music online for all of your instrument and accessory needs.

What will I learn in my first violin lessons?
  • Caring for your violin
  • How to hold the violin
  • How to hold the bow
How often will I need to practice?

A student should aim to practice 20-30 minutes a day. The more time you put into playing at home, the faster progress you will see.

How much do lessons cost?

One 30-minute lessons costs $25. You will receive one lesson every week. Lessons are billed monthly and pre-paid by the first of every month.
